The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
