Match Summary

  • Forest were already through to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos own goal gives hosts a first-half lead.
  • The striker's European strike puts the team in control.
  • Striker adds a third with a sharp finish in the latter period.
  • The midfielder rounds off a great performance with a spot-kick.

Igor Jesus found the net on two occasions as Nottingham Forest rounded off the league phase of the Europa League with a comfortable triumph against their Hungarian visitors at the home stadium.

The hosts had already secured a berth in the knockout round play-offs and went into this game with a slim possibility of reaching the league's elite, even though they required other matches to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this assured performance will give Forest fans confidence that their side can come through the home-and-away tie to advance to the round of sixteen.

Kristoffer Zachariassen struck the post with a header inside the opening stages for the away team – coached by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

They broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by the defender and doubled the lead four minutes later – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the far post for his tenth strike of the campaign.

Jesus' eleventh goal came early in the second half when he timed a run perfectly to break clear of the defence and then drive an effort beyond the goalkeeper.

The third strike ended Ferencvaros' hopes of making a comeback and instead the hosts added a fourth when the impressive James McAtee converted a penalty after a infringement by the unfortunate Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off lottery is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these players to do well as a unit, the entire team," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a good one."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as New Signing Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a revelation for Nottingham Forest in European competition this season with half of his eleven strikes coming in the tournament.

His brace also means he has scored three goals in his last two games and the prospect of competition for his position in attack could be spurring him on.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this game from the directors' box.

That may well have been on Jesus' mind as he was impressive against the opposition, delivering two superb finishes and overall being a menace to the visitors' defence with his speed and runs.

Jesus was not the only one in impressing, with James McAtee turning in his finest display in a Forest jersey since joining from Manchester City last summer, while Dan Ndoye also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some fresh hope as they switch focus to pulling further away from the bottom three when they welcome Crystal Palace on the weekend.

"All you can ask for is a response," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their dedication or integrity. It is just about displaying your ability.

"James was excellent and Dan Ndoye was super sharp. Igor got another couple and these are positive indicators."
