A replacement bowler was brought into the squad as injury reinforcement. The seamer had a tough time in the opening two Tests, taking just three wickets. He was left out for the Adelaide match, then recalled for the fourth Test to fill the void. Surrey's Atkinson showed better form in Melbourne, taking two wickets in Australia's first innings, then making 28 with the bat as one of just three teammates who passed ten runs. Post a single over late on the first day, he resumed for the second day's play and dismissed the nightwatchman edging to the keeper. Yet, at the end of that over, he bowled a slower ball to Travis Head and immediately felt for his hamstring. Gus Atkinson returned to the side for the Boxing Day Test following his omission the previous Test.
