Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
