Arrangements for Trump-Putin Meeting Postponed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Suggested

Currently exist "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has declared.

Recently the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to address the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" call and that a meeting was not "required".

The White House withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Earlier Events

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with those familiar suggesting Trump had pushed him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on Monday the American president supported a truce plan endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the war on the existing battle lines.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he stated.

Moscow has frequently resisted against freezing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, implying that freezing the front line would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict needed to be addressed, Lavrov stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of maximalist demands that involve the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently preceded speculation that the United States was preparing to send extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky said it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he added.
